    besides being Novembre, Audubon magazine I think has an article about them...and I think it was that article that said they were here already when the Pilgrims landed and earlier when the first Spaniards landed in Florida, yet I have been told time and again they were re-introduced back here by Europeans...so I missed something somewhere.

    The article talked about the Staten Island flock that has been annoying people there, it was seriously exterminated but is still there...

      extinction.  In the earlier part of the 20th century their numbers were precarious, and they were reintroduced and protected across much of the country.  Fortunately for them, they reproduce faster than falcons or condors.  When they started coming back, many of their former predators (coyotes, etc.) had been eradicated across much of their range, so they bounced back quickly.  On the west coast, they're mostly an introduced species; I'm not sure if there were any naturally occurring populations but they were "planted" all over.

      So now, yeah... they're pests in some places.  If there were more coyotes (and hawks/owls to take the poults) this wouldn't be the case.
