when all the rest of the several dozens of shorebirds also then decided to go to the lowering tide beach and all took off at once! They'd been resting and flocking at high tide but the tide going out is probably a big event for them every day at the same time of the lowering tide.

Ten seconds later I never would have seen it.

One could chart it as a function of the high tide times, especially in mud flats like Humboldt Bay or any of the other california creeks and river coastal estuaries like here.

Have had moments like that myself. I'm also generally alone and think to myself, how can I be the only person witnessing this astonishing sight? But usually I am. And it makes me realize over and over again how puny I am and how nature is a force so much larger than I or any other human can comprehend. And that makes me happy.
