As they say in real estate... location, location, location.

About ten years ago a Montreal-based ornithologist visited SF and stayed at our home the first night he was here.  We were going birding the following day, and I asked about his wish list - top of the list was Golden-crowned sparrow, and I said I was pretty sure it would be taken care of before we left the house.  It was literally the first bird of the day for him - calling as the sun came up and three in the yard visible at first light.

Of course, I've never had a white-throated here in the yard.

my yard here in Eureka, up the coast from you, last year. I had never seen (or noticed) any before. But my daughter in Santa Rosa has seen them in her yard, so perhaps they are making their way toward San Francisco. Worth spotting the chubby little guys; they are so cute! I don't have any pictures for you, but I assure you, they were here, and I'm watching for them to come back later this winter or early in the spring.

There's one for W. I was chuckling about how Kestrel got past S with Snipe and didn't need to use a single sparrow! But we have white-throated and white-crowned in case we need them.

Missed the window to rec this comment but oh, I did ponder that snipe vs any sparrow or sandpiper, too, of which I have many. Ultimately, I went with the snipe because it was just more of an interesting photo than any of the sparrows, to say nothing of the swallows! Hope you're doing well & keeping an eye on the ospreys!
