  •  Sorry, but a year in politics is an eternity (1+ / 0-)

A year in politics turns Rudy Giuliani from a Presidential front-runner into a political has-been.
A year in politics changes a sure-fire nominee into fighting for her political life against a political upstart.
A year in politics turns that political upstart first term Senator from Illinois from a "message candidate" into the nominee, and from the nominee into the President of the United States.

A year in politics also changes a monumental wave election and the feel-good spirit that carried with it into discontent and frustration that things were either changing too fast in some areas or not changing enough in others, on the House and on the state level -- partly due to Democratic and Independent apathy and ignorance, as well.

There was no way that the shutdown and the current feelings of hostility towards Republicans would be enough to sustain the low poll numbers or the coverage of the poor governance that the media was finally devoting. The Republicans will continue to provide the nation with shutdown and ideological showdowns, and must if their numbers are to return to where they belong. Believing that the American public would remember this last act beyond Christmas, though, is just not something that's backed up by the events of the last ten years.

    •  I agree with your basic point (0+ / 0-)

but Giuliani was never a frontrunner.  We Nyers knew that as soon as the light was shone on him it would all fall apart.  He was just a familiar name with a good image (for the rest of the country per 9/11).  There was nothing more to it, which was evident when he imploded as soon as attention was paid.

So forgive me if this is a double post.

Giuliani was leading just about every poll going into the Iowa Caucuses. Whether you and others saw his weaknesses is another conversation, as poll numbers and media attention had him demonstrably established as the front runner.
