Her biggest problem was with registered Democrats.  She never managed to win them over during her term in office.  What's the story?

Scandals in her administration, Mike Easley's administration, the state Democratic Party.  A recession that hit NC harder than almost any other state.  In the first half of her term, controversial legislation that included tax increases (albeit minimal ones) and the Racial Justice Act.  In the second half of her term, nothing was accomplished and she was at constant war with the legislature.  Perdue was personally gaffe-prone and perceived as being out of touch.

didn't Dan Malloy get a bit of a Sandy bump in CT?

Living in Kyoto-06 (Japan), voting in RI-01, went to college in IL-01.

And then Nixon got a bump with the tornadoes in MO. It's really hard to gauge what impact natural disasters have on politicians. For those who are already in the dumps, as Perdue was, it doesn't save them. For those who have average approvals (as Christie did before Sandy I think), if they're regarded as competent, then they get a big boost. If they have average approvals and not regarded as competent, they tank (I'm thinking Blaco in LA after Katrina).

Quinn is already very unpopular so I don't think this'll save him. He has to have an opponent who is bill brady. Fortunately, brady leads in the GOP primary polls right now

And that was apart from her absolutely disaster of a Katrina response. She never should have been anywhere near the governor's mansion, and I have no doubt that she is part of the reason why Dems are no longer competitive even in some ancestral areas of the state.
