    and John Kerry came damn close, yet for both of them the South was their worst region of the big four. I think my favorite anecdote is some pundit, I can't remember who, saying on the eve of 1992 that the key to Democrats winning the president was winning rural Texas... those areas voted for Romney with over 70%.

      published in 1989 with Michael Barone as head writer, asserted that rural Texas was the key to winning the presidency.  Based on the data he gave (no Democrat had won the presidency until then without Texas, and those that carried it did so by winning the rural areas) that assertion was accurate to that point, but has been inoperative since November 1992.

      While Clinton did win several "solid South" states, he had more than enough electoral votes elsewhere to win nationally without a single one of them.
