There seems to be a general idea among liberals and progressives that hard-nosed conservativism is bad for church attendance, when the opposite has been, in fact, the case.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the US Catholic Bishops completely embraced the antiwar and social justice movements, fomenting social justice committees at the parish level and organizing politically to stop US intervention in Central America, provide sanctuary to refugees from US-sponsored wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador, and support unionization and other progressive causes.  They lobbied as heavily for a nuclear freeze as they did against gay marriage.

But what happened during this period?  Priest ordinations and seminarians dropped dramatically, and as any organizer knows, without someone to foment participation, attendance and participation will drop as well.

The return to conservatism era since about 1995 has allowed a stabilization of the exodus of the 1970s and 1980s.  Attendance has been stable as have priest recruitments.

It may just be the case that the kind of people whole feel most like going to church are more turned off by liberal preaching than conservative preaching, so I am not really surprised by the apparent alliance between conservatives and clerics.

This isn't new or something American  either.  Throughout history, the "Pharisee" role has tended to ally with the conservative elements of the day, in Christianity as Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and most other religions. Even Jesus himself was eventually sent to his death by the conservatives clerics of his day, after all.  That is why this Pope's statements against "clericism" are refreshing buy may eventually be his undoing as the chief organizer of the Catholic Church as well.

in bed, mysteriously deceased, with his bedroom having been carefully cleaned up before admitting la polizia...

The last time the Republicans were this radical, they were working to elect former slaves to Congress. What a difference a century and a half makes!

        •  Well then in that case just change it to "everyone (0+ / 0-)

(including himself, of course) in the hostel where he is staying mysteriously found dead" then.

          •  That would be a LOT harder to cover up. (0+ / 0-)

Maybe if they did it during a cold snap and faked or created a carbon monoxide leak in the heating system.  They might not even need to kill everyone there.  Pope Francis has only one lung, I expect he'd sucumb sooner than a person with two lungs.

      •  My fears exactly (0+ / 0-)

I was thinking the same thing.

A village can not reorganize village life to suit the village idiot.
