    And the two premier examples are 'I have a dream' and Lincoln's second inaugural.

    Other very very good speeches are made great, and the Gettysburg address is this country's premier example. Precisely because it is so short, so very pithy, and in those few words so perfectly balanced between love for what this country is, love for what she must become, and respect for the sacrifices made on behalf of both, it has been set for children to learn by heart, generation after generation.

    It is the magnificent weight of that shared heritage, that shared understanding of what it means to be an American, which has raised this speech to the same level of importance as the other two.

    Unless of course you despise Abraham Lincoln, despise America and all she has stood for, and like half the modern GOP prefer the value system represented by the Stars and Bars. But it is a good thing that even those hypocrites with their brains fried in Fox oil still find themselves forced to pay at least lip service to Gettysburg.
