than just glucose levels. There is a circulation of cholesterol in the body which is well-regulated at multiple points.

I called the idea that eating cholesterol raises your cholesterol the doctrine of signatures.

    •  As cholesterol is poorly absorbed (1+ / 0-)

It's made by the body, liver, adrenals and gonads being large contributors.

Of course, I also remember the immune/inflammatory response theory being bandied about as well a few years back.

      •  There's also a hepato-biliary circulation which (0+ / 0-)

cycles derivatives of cholesterol around between the gut and the liver - lots of places to tweak uptake and synthesis.

        •  Those derivatives (0+ / 0-)

serve a different function, and shouldn't be messed with too much - they largely help to absorb fat-soluble vitamins and to break down fatty crystals in the bile which can form the nuclei of gallstones.

      •  I tell my patients all the time (0+ / 0-)

that the cholesterol content of food is relatively irrelevant. Only about 20% of your serum cholesterol is absorbed from your diet AS cholesterol. The rest is made by your liver from (drum roll please) saturated fats. THAT'S the stuff you need to watch out for.
