The two major cities, for many years, had strong industrial bases, good unions and a strong Democratic bent.  The demise came around the time of RR and the wrecking of several of those major industries.  Junk bond thieves invaded a couple, Lackadaisical CEOs ignored trends and those stalwart job providers then went the way of much of America's strong economies.  GM, Fisher Body, KW - Dart, Trans World Airlines, National Air Traffic Controllers, were all high quality Kansas City Missouri jobs Those "economy generators" were dismantled by the  tacit endorsement of the right wing legislatures in both state and federal levels.   The push for deregulation, the drives for enacting "Right to Work" (for less) laws, and patting the butts of the junk bond raiders added to the decline.  In 8 to 10 years the economy in western Missouri tanked but how it happened that the mules in the Show Me state swallowed the right-wing swill just can't be explained.  There were some KKK and John Birchers but the majority of the Union members I worked to recruit for Democratic candidates were the most stubborn in voting against their best interests.

I fervently hope, as humans, we never escape from this earth to spread our bigotry elsewhere.
