"The cause of gun violence is people with guns."  So the standard reply you will get to this is that more people are killed by hammers than are killed by rifles.  If you want fewer killings we make it so there are fewer hammers.  Do you support hammer control?

You will also be confronted by the fact that a concealed carry permit holder is less likely to commit any crime than a police officer.  So you want to take the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens and only arm those more likely to commit a crime?  And I suppose you can tell the Minutemen that guns aren't for freedom.

Your arguments only work with other progressives as the above arguments only work with conservatives.  As long as we have the deep polarization we have today you can play that card as much as you want and it will do no good.

    •  These aren't so much polemical arguments as ways (0+ / 0-)

of framing the issue by drawing on existing models of causality that are embedded in our cognition. Political discourse is dialectical, and there is an iterative process of proposing arguments, responding with counter-arguments, defending arguments against counter-arguments with further counter-arguments, and so on to the nth order. But political discourse, even rigorous discourse which explicitly follows a dialectic, is predicated on a set assumptions about how the world works. Intentionally evoking these nested assumptions in repeated and effective ways is a method for achieving greater success in making arguments from a progressive point of view.
