    ...in order to get some blinkered old-school Democrats to eliminate the filibuster at least partially.

    But, who are these people trying to kid? Once they go down this road, there's no turning back. The filibuster will be dead forever. There's no way it will be applied to SCOTUS nominees, ever again. Legislation will also probably have its filibuster rules eliminated.

    So, why not just do it all now and reap the benefits of it while you still can?

      There is too much political pressure to not be obstructionist surrounding the highest of the high profile appointments. Yellin is getting confirmed today, for example. We need  the death of the filibuster for the 99.% of other appointments and, well, the entire legislative process.
