  •  Hey, I finally read the diary. (10+ / 0-)

    My 'squirrel' is my wife.

    (She commands my attention,
right in the middle of other things.)

    (She says,
    "Give me attention!")

But we also have three dogs,
    and a cat.

The weather turned very cold and windy,
    here in Wichita, Kansas:

    Wichita weather

    We brought them in,
    a few hours ago,
but we had to throw the cat back out,
    since we can't eat
with his face in our bowls.

And the three dogs are too wild
to be loose in our room,
so we put all three in a big pet taxi.

    But after a few hours,
they needed to go back outside,
    to eat and drink water,
    and pee and poo.

    I just took them out,
    after breaking the ice
    out of their water bowls,
    and putting liquid water in,
and plenty of food in their food bowls.

    A sleet storm is predicted,
    in a few hours;
I plan to bring them back in,
    at about 4 AM.

After the worst of the cold night is over,
    and the sun is up,
    about 9 AM,
    (I have my alarm set)
I'll get up and take them back out.

I have to go to work,
from 1 PM to 10 PM.

    I can feed them,
and break their ice out of their bowls,
    and bring them back in,
    when I get back home,
    about midnight.

This is why I need to find time
to build that insulated dog house.

    This is not northern Minnesota;
    I think they'll be okay,
    in 25 degree weather,
    in an insulated dog house.

That's about as cold as it gets
    in Wichita.

This is my way of using my day off,
    staying in a good mood.

    Thanks for the diary.

we had an outside dog in Pennsylvania, who was my dad's dog when he was younger (this dog lived to be about 25 years old and was about 17 when we inherited him). Every winter my dad would put most of a hay bale in his dog house and make sure there were no leaks. My mom would warm his food before she took it out, or pour leftover soup broth over, and she'd put warm (tea temperature) water in his bowl so it wouldn't freeze as fast.
He was some kind of poodle mix, big and furry, and he seemed to do ok outside in the cold.
All of our other dogs were inside dogs, my mom didn't approve of keeping dogs outside. But he was too old to bring in when he came to us, so she dealt with us, and he outlived all the inside dogs in life span.
