  •  What I concluded yesterday is that the Cons (15+ / 0-)

do not even want to govern or rule. They just want to grandstand and be noticed and look important. Which means that compromise to stop their whining is entirely counter-productive. And compromising other peoples' rights is just plain wrong.

Anyway, it seems the media have noticed that, when they provide news and information the public wants to read, the public will pay.

    •  I resent the way many news websites are (5+ / 0-)

requiring payment now--especially when I contemplate how even if I pay up, I will still be required to watch commercials every 5th article or whatever. The Washpost wasnts $9.99 every 4 weeks, and someone more astute than I pointed out that's 13 payments a year, not 12. Bastards.

Certainly, they haven't adjusted their coverage to better serve the citizenry.

I also think the nation's newspaper site ought to be free, but perhaps I'm being naive.

          •  Nickle and diming is a great waste of time. (0+ / 0-)

Money is a good accounting mechanism and feed-back is necessary to improve quality and service. However, when the profit/accumulation motive takes over, the valuing component tends to get lost. Time is not money and money is not time. However, money does make it possible to overcome the limitations of time and space, saving time, which, for every one of us, is definitely in limited supply, though we don't, for the most part, know how much we have left. Which is why people who waste our time are doing us the worst disservice and people who waste our time are the people whom we should most resent.

          •  You're naive. (0+ / 0-)

See my questions in another post about how you think they will maintain their operation without subscriptions and advertising.

for the WaPo and other news gathering companies?  How do you imagine they will pay their staff and maintain whatever infrastructure that staff needs?

Whatever you do for a living, should it be given away for free?

    •  Sure they want to rule. (0+ / 0-)

Just look at what they've done in states they've taken over recently (Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina etc.)

They just don't want any governance to happen at all if they're not the ones doing it.  Hence the death of honest compromise.

      •  Well, they may want to, but they sure don't (0+ / 0-)

know how. So, the result is a mess.
