  •  There is no guarantee rates will not go up (3+ / 0-)

But this is not single payer this is private insurance and rates have gone up in the past, so what's new.

It is not a cure-all. We should not promote it as a cure-all. It is a first step.

Insurance companies are essentially giant hedge funds. They invest their surplus as they see fit. Rates went up far more than expenses.

        •  You would prefer they sleep with their (0+ / 0-)

          "surplus" under their pillows?

Reserves are invested; that doesn't mean they are hedge funds. You need to look up hedge funds.

Medicare and Social Security "surplus" or reserves are invested also; but they are invested in Treasury notes.

        •  But they start lower and go up less (0+ / 0-)

I think the difference in overhead is something like single-payer 3% vs. for-profit 30%, except the ACA now limits it to 20%.

          •  Alice, Medicare's old alleged low (0+ / 0-)

overhead hides the expenses of the DOJ and HHS fraud investigators.

One reason health care costs have barely increased in the last few years is because of the increased fraud effort by the Obama administration. Medicare was LOSING 10% to outright fraud. Add that 10% to the 3% plus the outside of Medicare costs and it is comparable to insurers costs. (their outright fraud levels were much much lower.)
