(in any ongoing way)   in what later would be considered either a good or an honorable cause ...

Because what I remember is that it  was the last ditch tool of the States Rights Senators  -- consistent with the "Lost Cause" nostalgia for the Confederacy-as-It-Should-Have-Been.

    Principle issues:

    "Lynching ought NOT be illegal"
    "Rights ought NOT be equal."

    And what else ?

Bernie Sanders against reinstating Bush Tax Cuts... a number of others.

      •  Both were 1-day symbolic gestures ... (1+ / 0-)

And I vaguely remember the temporary blockage of a couple of Bush lower court appointments ...

But isn't the equivalency a little false here ?

        •  Not intended to be equivalent. (0+ / 0-)

If it were so intended, it would absolutely be false!

        •  And Wendy Davis (0+ / 0-)

did not act out of need for symbolic gestures... she forced the GOP administration and the GOP majority to act in extremely blatant and extremely unconventional fashion... made them declare a second emergency session just to pass their pet bill. She probably knew she would not win in the medium term... but sometimes exposing the enemy in a near-term "losing battle" enables you to defeat them more thoroughly later. Same goes for Sanders, actually -- of course he had not much hope of actually reversing the legislative momentum... but he certainly had the opportunity to rally the progressive activists and their allies, and he used it well.

Sometimes making a statement in a loss winds up being a win.

          •  So .... Sanders and Davis -- that's IT ? (0+ / 0-)

Then  abolishing the filibuster altogether would NOT pose a serious problem for Democratic progressive legislators in the US Senate.
