  •  When I think 'Wal Mart...' (24+ / 0-)

I don't think "Quality goods at bargain prices."

I think, "Massively greedy family owns huge chain that exploits its workers."

When I think 'Papa John's Pizza,' I don't think, "Bargains in pizza," I think, "These workers can't afford to take a sick day so sick people might be making my food."

When I think 'McDonalds,' I don't think of Ronald McDonald and all the happy multi-cultural animated ads flooding children's tv programming.

Nope, I think 'Put up a website telling workers to get a second job, take two vacations, suck it up and quit whining, sell your Xmas prezzies on Craigslist."

This is sort of the opposite of what advertising does, but it's exactly what we as a society need to bring up repeatedly lest people forget what's behind all these abusive corporations.

    •  Not Even Quality Goods (11+ / 0-)

Unfortunately, the goods sold by Wal-Mart at those low, low prices aren't even the quality the saps buying them believe they are.  Too often, the suppliers have willingly attached their brand name to an item which has been designed solely to meets Wal-Mart's price points.  To achieve that, the supplier reduces the quality of the product by reducing the expected service life of the item - cheaper wire, less resilient switches, thinner and cheaper plastic, less attention to simple quality control.  The items are essentially a store brand that some fool of a supplier is willing to sacrifice their brand on to deal with Wal-Mart.  The ultimate irony is that Wal-Mart will make a profit but the supplier will not.  The new spelling for parasite is "W-a-l-M-a-r-t."

      •  Much of what Wal-Mart sells is total shit. But (0+ / 0-)

they're not the only one selling total shit.  Much of what is now sold here is pretty much shit.  Good quality goods cost far more than what is available from mass merchants today.
