  •  Watch NOVA reconstruction. Pretty solid evidence (7+ / 0-)

for single bullet. Episode is "Cold Case JFK" with description:

Fifty years later, what can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination—and the investigations that followed? The 1963 murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses, might seem to be a homicide investigator’s best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK assassination became a forensic nightmare, plagued by a controversial autopsy and, incredibly, a prime suspect murdered on live television while in police custody, before he could be tried. As a result, today millions of Americans suspect a conspiracy. Now, NOVA launches a fresh investigation into the physical evidence, using state-of-the-art forensics, including laser scanning, new ballistics tests, and a 3D digital reconstruction of the president's skull, all to try to solve the murder of the century. “Cold Case JFK”is part of series of specials airing on PBS in November to commemorate the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death.
Examination of the single bullet issue starts at about 20 minutes into the program and involves scientific test firing and such that pretty much confirms the single bullet—surprisingly so as per the tumble on exit from ballistic gel and the hole in Connolly's jacket.

    •  This, it was a great show and the high speed photo (5+ / 0-)

showing how the Carcano bullet always yaws after passing through the ballistic gel and soap explains the extreme damage to Connally after passing through Kennedy.....

Not only that but the bullet was and is damaged...on the base where it would be if it entered Connally' sideways like the ballistic tests showed it would....

Plus the Carcano uses an extremely odd bullet, it is almost like a round pencil, long and straight with a small rounded tip, no spire point like most bullets use....This causes it to act oddly on impact.....

This Nova Special ended any question for me.....

      •  Right after I posted that I was in the car and (4+ / 0-)

the two that did the testing were on PBS radio with more detail in some ways during the discussion. One was the whole "magic bullet" thing in which they point out what they proved was typical behavior. Second they mentioned the "seven hits" but note that 1 was JFK's neck, 2 was the governor's torso and 3 was his wrist and maybe 3½ the shallow penetration of his thigh.

Of course a quick web search shows the CT crowd is busily refuting the findings with at least one still going on about "The question is not whether the bullet could cause seven non-fatal wounds in two men but whether it did." Ah, the seven wounds again. Guess that exit of the skin counts when all that tunneling through body parts and cavities is zilch.

Thar is money in them thar CT hills!

That's where I know the type of work in that show from, otherwise.

after round, the 6.5 consistently went into yaw as soon as it exited the medium whether ballistic gel or soap....then hit the backer sideways, just like the entrance wound in Connally and his jacket shows a flat hit.......

like you pointed out upthread, the head motion is explainable with basic physics and as the PBS show pointed out, a brain hit will often result in a spasm which would have thrown him back due to the brace he was wearing....

One of the docs who worked on him thought the brace held him up for the head shot....without it he would have slumped over like Connally did and the head shot couldn't have happened.....

the actual live fire ballistics tests with the same rifle and cartridge, was a great rebuttal of the multiple shooter theory...This one really nailed it down for me, esp seeing how the 6.5 always went into a yaw position on exit from the medium really explaining the so called "magic bullet".....

I have loaded for the 30 caliber Carcano and it's a PITA....uses a .299 projectile which is damn near unavailable...one company makes one weight in that diameter....ugly rifles too imo....

military rifles available for around $300 each, that were, IIRC, better rifles than the Carcano. Pre-1899 military bolt-actions -- odd configuration, possibly odd caliber.

But Oswald had good shooter ratings in USMC training.
Not sniper-good, but sharpshooter-good. He very well may have been highly underrated ...
