countries have, of being relatively homogenous culturally and ethnically and having a very long history during which our various differences were flattened somewhat. Other countries have lots of stupid people, but have developed ways of containing them. We're still working on that.

    •  Homogeneity is greatly overrated (0+ / 0-)

It allows Japan to pretend that it does not oppress its Ainu, Eta, Himin, and Baraku native populations, nor its Korean, Chinese, and other foreign populations, including people whose families have lived in Japan for more than 600 years.

Compare this with the diversity of the Swiss Confederation: originally Italian, German, and French speakers who managed to hold together even when Calvin and Zwingli were inventing various kinds of Protestantism, and the rest of Europe fell into the Thirty Years War and numerous other wars of religion.

      •  Overrated, yes, but politically convenient (0+ / 0-)

I need not mention far more obvious and horrible examples (hint: I'm Jewish). I think that our heterogeneity is a huge plus and one of our greatest strengths, but it does complicate things politically. Diversity will triumph in the end as whites accept their permanent minority status. But it's a long slow messy slog.
