massive profits easily.  Part of what is going on is that they are trying to squeeze the hospitals to accept the insurers reimbursement rates.

Have you gotten a hospital bill lately?  Don't even tell me it costs that much to change sheets and pay housekeepers.  Five star hotels are far cheaper. And if you need intensive or "extra" nursing care, they pile that on top of it, so don't think that hospital bill even covers any real "care."  Certainly it doesn't cover any doctors or surgery or anything they actually DO in there.

I demanded an itemized bill for an emergency visit to an urgent care center for a deep cut on a finger twenty years ago and got back the items that included a couple  hundred dollars for "dressing for a wound."  It was a BAND-AID.  Of course, I paid the thing.  They never tell you what anything will cost in advance, so you're stuck.  They'll send the bill collectors after you in a heartbeat and destroy your life if they can (and they can). But I've always kinda wished I'd sent them a box of bandaids and told them they could keep the change.

For profit hospitals gouge everyone, including insurance companies.  The companies are tough negotiators too, though.  Here's hoping they're tough enough to get the vultures' prices down.
