    poorly paid social workers get no special benefits, and they are overtly secular. why should a minister get any, just because they work for a non-profit church? all of the special church benefits built into the code are, by defition, violative of the establishment clause. the only reason they still exist is because the IRS itself can't challenge them, it requires a third party to do so.

    if someone chooses to enter into (usually) poorly paid pastoral work, that's their decision. the rest of us, who may not share their particular religious beliefs, should not be forced, by virtue of the tax code, to indirectly support them. it's really just that simple.
