...my pants fell down to my ankles, I tripped and almost broke my neck. The problem is not that we don't have enough money. The problem is the money is do have is going down the wrong rabbit holes. $1.3 trillion over a 10 year period for the F-35 Joint Strike fighter? The Iraq and Afghanistan wars are pushing the $2 trillion threshold. That's a whole hell of a lot of money that could be better spent on badly needed infrastructure repairs, bridges ready to collapse, highways with more potholes than the moon has craters, education, and building a sustainable, renewable green energy-based economy here. And the list of misprioritized hot topics goes on and on. You really find out in a hurry who really rules this nation when you follow the money trail.

      I keep saying, 5X, 5X, 5X!

I think we should limit military spending to the combined total of the next five largest military budgets in the world. I mean, if we're fighting the next five largest countries, simultaneously, then probably we're on the wrong side.

That would get us down to around $400 billion were we could decide how much we want to cut to get what we need.

We're around $750 billion a year. I want to cut $35 billion a year each year year over year for ten years. We can spend that $35 billion each year in areas where we normally spend on the military and use it for a program to convert military jobs to civilian jobs.

So, yeah, let's tie programs to actual needs. That would mean we spend less in some areas, and more in others. Let's spend it on the problems we have, not the problems we want to have.

...no way our "defense" budget should exceed the next 100 industrialized nations in the world-combined. The MIC looks at it quite differently. The US came very close to losing WWII, a lot closer than they'd like to admit. We broke the Japanese Naval code and the German Enigma code and knew every move they made...and we still barely stopped Imperial Japan and Hitler's Reich. Most of the decisive battles in Europe were on the Russian front, not the Eastern front. Stalingrad and Kursk were Hitler's waterloo, contrary to what our history books say. We learned in Korea and Vietnam that MAD applies only to nuclear deterrence, not conventional war. So the word I'm thinking of here is "overkill".
