  •  I have a buddy that had just graduated (0+ / 0-)

from the police academy. He was justifiably proud.

During a BS session, the subject of searching a suspect arose. So, I had him search me.
He noticed my Gerber knife on my belt and removed it from its pouch. He noticed my carabiner on my belt and removed it, with the keys hanging from it.
He missed something inside my belt, nestled around where the knife pouch was.
A full size M1911A1 pistol. You know, the old Army .45 caliber pistol.

He learned that day, I hope it saves his life someday.

Mistakes happen. That said, I have absolutely no idea how one shoots oneself to death  while handcuffed. The firearm would, by anatomical requirements, be pointed away from the vast majority of vital areas. Even to strike a renal artery should be impossible. To strike the lower aorta should be astoundingly difficult. To strike a femoral artery branch insanely improbable.
It'd be far more likely to shoot oneself in the ass at worst case.
While that might cause major brain damage to a politician, it would only be an annoying injury for the average citizen.

Still, that is what investigations are for. To figure out exactly what happened.
Then, to learn and apply lessons learned.
It's just a damned shame that a lesson had to be learned at the cost of a human life.
