  •  Learfield has the rights, and it's bid (1+ / 0-)

Badger sports is its own entity (now called Badger Sports Properties) and is part of Learfield Communications, which won the bid 20 years ago and has had it ever since. I assume there's a bidding element once the contract nears its end- at the very least they decide whether to renew or give it to someone else.

There's a similar controversy with Badger sports this year because they bid out the concessions contract, and it went from the W Club (a UW alumni organization) to for-profit Levy Industries. There were enough complaints in the first few games that UW gave away free $10 gift cards for concessions to all season ticket holders in a "we're sorry, please try us again" kind of move.

I don't know offhand how often the Brewers or Packers or Bucks bid out for who broadcasts and where the affiliates are. Morrell may have more on that side.

    •  search: "sports properties" learfield - many unis (0+ / 0-)

      doing learfield.

at CU it's buffalo sports properties and i read they have an office on campus.

i wonder how open/automatic the bidding process is.

i think RW radio is heavily dependent on those university logos. i wish dems and liberals got involved in making sure it's not just slam dunk for renewing those relationships. it would only take a few unis to declare they will no longer endorse the RW radio station(s) that works against their interests to start a trend, methinks.

but which unis will start that?

i wonder if dem/uni donors could be organized to help make the transition easier- to make up the slack of going to slightly smaller stations, etc.

i think the notion that universities are shooting themselves in the foot in many ways would be an effective selling point for getting them to switch to apolitical radio.

knowing how much a uni is getting for that radio licensing component would be helpful but learfield keeps it secret. maybe the uni needs to make it public.

This is a list of 76 universities for Rush Limbaugh that endorse global warming denial, racism, sexism, and GOP lies by broadcasting sports on over 170 Limbaugh radio stations.

    •   there is a network of local affiliates across (0+ / 0-)

thee state ' thats why uecker says ' and now 10 seconds for local stations to identify themselves' so places like beaver dam, appleton, green bay superior etc. as for how often they bid out or how much, again i'm not sure. i don't think they disclose terms when they sign such contracts. they can, but i dont recall ever seeing terms for the contract such as length and how much money is involved. frankly the badgers are probably the third most popular in the state behind the Packers and Brewers, the bucks are dying, and frankly i'd like to see an NHL team replace them. bump up the Admirals anyone? milwaukee had some of the best ratings for hockey during the Stanley Cup playoffs last year, in a market without a team. part of that was the blackhawks run, but this is a good hockey state.
