  •  30 years now this Iranian bomb is going to be made (10+ / 0-)

real soon. Meanwhile, the British Press reports our true and loyal friends, the Beneficent Saudis, have nukes on order from Pakistan. http://www.jpost.com/...

President Obama has done as much as a person can be expected to do to hold back the rightwing war-crackpots of all nations, and still stay in office. This deal makes the fantasy of an Iranian bomb even more delusional.

Anybody with half a brain and the willingness to use it can figure out if Iran bombed Israel the fallout would destroy Iran shortly after. You sure as hell can bet the Iranians have worked out the region's weather patterns.

The brain-fart that "oh, they're suicidal terrorists" ignores that there are very few, if any, instances of suicides being committed by the higher ups in any jihadist terror outfit. It's always some young idiot, and not from an important family, you can be sure.

I imagine you can ask children in Gaza what an existential threat looks like. http://www.juancole.com/... .

    •  The real rulers of Iran are billionaires who live (0+ / 0-)

in luxury, having confiscated the wealth of the Shah's minions and others who have fled. They don't want to upset the apple cart. Sanctions are beginning to threaten that, so they are being accommodating all of a sudden.

The Iranians have been playing the same game as North Korea. They don't want a functioning bomb (because that would be dangerous); they want a bomb development program that they can use as a bargaining chip.

Stratfor describes the strategy as appearing crazy, dangerous, and weak- like a weasel backed in a corner. You don't want to attack it because you might get hurt, yet it isn't strong enough to attack you.

      •  North Korea clearly wanted a functioning bomb (1+ / 0-)

since it has one now. They tried to use the bomb development program as a bargaining chip but they didn't feel they were getting enough so they went ahead and built the bomb. Iran probably just wants the 'breakout capability' like you described. But in the absence of highly enriched uranium and with relatively vigorous inspections it won't have the ability to build the bomb immediately. And if it takes them a year to build a bomb after everyone learns that they are going to do it that's not much of a deterrent.

      •  How many billionaires in Iran? (1+ / 0-)

And how are billionaires different in any country. It seems to there are probably many more billionaires in the US. Also that they are likely to be as powerful as as devious as they are in Iran.

In any event, I'm doubtful that the supreme religious leaders in Iran are selected based on money. I think that the way propaganda works is that you always accused the leadership on the other side as being extremely wealthy while all of the poor peasants have to live in extreme privation.

War is costly. Peace is priceless!
