My wife and I have let our back yard go totally natural.  We don't mow, we don't rake the leaves, we don't do anything to it except try to get rid of invasive exotic plants when they appear.  (If anybody has a magic bullet to get rid of lesser celandene, I'd love to hear it.  It's so far been impossible for us to get rid of the stuff.)  And we occasionally fertilize our front yard, but we've sprayed no herbicides or insecticides on it for several years.  It doesn't look as evenly green as our neighbors with lawn services, but we also have some clover, violets, and wild strawberries in it.

I just sent an email to the head of my church's Care of Creation committee suggesting that we turn part of our property into a large butterfly garden, complete with plenty of milkweed.

    •  How many churches (0+ / 0-)

have a Care of Creation committee? Can we depend upon churches to Care for Creation? I would guess that the loss of the Monarch Butterfly is simply collateral damage in the economic war raged by Roundup.
