    which political party is on his side and to whom he owes loyalty.

    You have to know rural America, especially in the South. People indicate that they are going to do some action by phrases like "I believe I'm going to" whatever.  And narrative and loyalty play huge roles in self-identification and voter behavior--far more than abstract discussion of issues.
