a robust planting of native prairie,  oak savanna, or oak woodland chokes out dandelions within a few years.  The deep roots of the natives and their heavier top growth leave little room for dandelions. By contrast mowed bluegrass turf is optimum habitat for dandelions,  as the 10 to 14 inch dandelion tap root easily penetrates below the shallow 6 inch deep lawn grass roots.  The depth of native vegetation roots also provides much greater benefit of intercepting rain fall and returning it to the ground water,  as well as locking more carbon under ground.
