  •  Slandered, I tell you , (11+ / 0-)

         we was slandered.

HENRY GIROUX: It's organized because it's systemic. It's organized because you have people controlling schools who are deleting those histories and making sure that they don't appear. In Tucson, Arizona they banished ethnic studies from the curriculum. This is the dis-imagination machine. That's the hardcore element.
We didn't ban books in Tucson dammit. That was Phoenix, Right-Wing Maricopa County, cracking down on progressive educators in more liberal Tucson.
Other than that, good interview. I hope it gets a wide audience.

The only fault that can be laid on Tucson is that TUSD didn't want to contest the decision further in the courts because of the costs, both legal and the loss of state school funding.

    •  He didn't say that (7+ / 0-)

He didn't say banning books. He said banishing ethnic studies.
And he wasn't blaming the people of Tucson. He was pointing out an example.

      •  I know, but still, (5+ / 0-)

people around the country, and the world for that matter, now associate Tucson with the banishment of Mexican-American Studies when, in fact, Tucson Unified School District should be lauded for having had such a program in the first place. It's the wingnut Governor, AG and legislature in Phoenix who deserve the calumny.
