  •  Why I dislike "stochastic terrorism" (3+ / 0-)

Thank you Mr. Wells for writing this and sharing this article with us.

I agree that historically the label "terrorist" has been used by those in power to protect themselves against any opposition.

Here at dkos, it is now fashionable to call conservative media personalities "stochastic terrorists".  This to me is dangerous as it is misleading.

It is misleading because calling a Glenn Beck or a Rush Limbaugh a "stochastic terrorist" is a quick and easy way to criticize without actually identifying what behaviors are being criticized.

And it is dangerous because it is only a matter of time before the label "stochastic terrorist" is being used against a Bill Maher, a Bill Moyer, or a dkos diarist.

Finally, the word "terrorism" has spawned an entire war, and justifies subjecting average Americans to airport and subway searches and intercepted phone calls.  I shudder to think what kinds of abuses will accompany the "terrorist" label tomorrow.

It is wrong from a Constitutional basis and it is wrong from practical point.

We on the left should never advocate for a further abridgment of speech. It will come back to haunt us.
