  •  Yeah, but WHAT vital legislative business (4+ / 0-)

Could move forward, get passed in the Senate, and THEN get passed (or even taken up) by the Republican House?  With Boner sitting on his gavel it mostly doesn't matter whether the Senate can do committee work, it ain't getting through.  But now the Senate can do ONE SMALL PART of its job- approve appointments that they were going to approve anyway, 98 to nothing.

    •  Not legislation (4+ / 0-)

The immediate order of business is the 93 judges that will need to be vetted by the Judiciary Committee and then confirmed by the full Senate, including the 55 previously nominated, and 38 more to come, now that confirmation is actually possible. If Republicans try to bollix committee meetings, Leahy is now mad enough to support changing committee rules. Reid could even bring the nominations straight to the floor if need be.

But Republicans cannot withhold a quorum on the Judiciary Committee. The Senate as a whole requires 51 members present as a quorum. Judiciary Committee rules don't even require a majority of members to be present. Six members is sufficient, out of 10 Democrats and 8 Republicans. (Having Ted Cruz refuse to attend would be a distinct improvement.)

Dealing with the filibuster on legislation is a longer game. If the Senate can start passing bills in January without endless obstruction, and continue all through campaign season, all Democrats will be able to campaign against the No-Vote House. They will be able to tell their constituents about any of a laundry list of real bills, not just platform planks, that a House Democratic majority would be ready to pass for the benefit of people in those particular districts as well as across the country. We can start with ENDA, and then go on to women's rights, voting rights, labor rights, education, jobs, infrastructure, revenue, Global Warming, and all the rest.

      •  Thanks Mokurai... (0+ / 0-)

Appreciate the clarification re: committees vs Senate as a whole...

Come to think of it, having Republicans stay OUT of committee meetings (and hearings) might be a marked improvement over the ludicrous Kabuki theater we have been subjected to since 20 Jan 09.

America's LAST HOPE: vote the GOP OUT in 2014 elections. MAKE them LOSE the House Majority and reduce their numbers in the Senate. Democrats move America forward - Republicans take us backward and are KILLING OUR NATION!
