First, I don’t watch television, so I may well be missing out on certain aspects of popular culture. (My wife and I do have a TV-screen, but it is not hooked up to any antenna of cable system; we watch films that we stream or purchase. Why? We’re both rather allergic to commercials.)

Online news sources? That depends on what stories are unfolding. Some of my top choices are the BBC, NYT, The Christian Science Monitor, Al Jazeera English (especially during the Arab Spring), San Jose Mercury News, The Guardian, Mother Jones, Truth-Out.org, The Economist. And these days (because of the ACA): the excellent Kaiser Health News.

Others I visit more occasionally including Rolling Stone, The New Republic, The Atlantic.

For counterbalance: the National Review, Politico, Time, Newsweek, Bloomberg Businessweek, Fox News (yes, sometimes I want to know their selection/deselection and how they’re spinning things).

Oh, sure, I’ve seen Ms Kardashian mentioned on rare occasion, but inevitably with a link to said news site’s celebrity section – in which I have zero interest.

I once became curious and Googled Kim Kardashian in order to find out what she had actually accomplished. I’m not being facetious, but I honestly couldn’t find anything.

From one of my daughters I did learn, as Pencils astutely points out, that Kardashian is a brand name, just as Paris Hilton apparently is. I’m sure that lands them a lot of money in the bank, but (and I may be a deviant) I don’t actually consider that an accomplishment.

    •  I'll give her credit for finding a way to turn (0+ / 0-)

being a rich girl into a sustained living.
Lots of them don't manage that.

People make money writing comic books and TV shows, too.
I don't begrudge any of them.
Wish I could do the same.

is a wonderful thing! As are many comics.

Dave McKean is a delight, what he’s done with Neil Gaiman – and even more so his own stuff, such as Cages. And Arrival by Shaun Tan (although that may be considered a children’s book). Frank Miller is brilliant, imho. I love Dark Horse Comics.

Will Eisner is worth a study all his own!

          The art is truly phenomenal.
