  •  From experience, I've seen the charge for the meal (5+ / 0-)

    to be processed first (for approval); the  tip put thru shortly after.  The final total charge is what shows up on the customers credit card bill.
    The processing method allows the restaurant to make sure it gets approval for the meal----and then worries about the tip charge.
    I've seen this from personal experience...

      Only Debit cards will apply the extra amount because the account is fluid.  A regular credit card will not seek an approval limit for more than the charge before tip.  CC's are paid monthly and debit cards are linked to an account with funds in it.
