    for a family member with a similar very large hospital bill is that hospital costs were covered after the deductible (as long as they were in-patient status).  What you have to watch for like a hawk (in the hospital and later) is the unexpected billings from specialists, many of whom are out of network and therefore have very large co-pays, many on a percentage basis (your plan may vary).  No anesthesiologists or radiologists for example were participating providers.  The insurance company was also stingy re physical therapy.  My family member ended up with about 35k in out of pocket costs, plus unreimbursed home health care costs of 16 k because they were pushed out of the hospital far from able to care for themselves or even get in and out of bed by themselves.
