  •  ERDoc, Thank you for your thoughtful diary... (13+ / 0-)

I'm always amazed by the skills of our ER Docs, nurses and techs...they are truly amazing in what they do considering the variety of situations they are dealing with. As a nursing student I did a few clinical rotations in the ER, that was all I needed for me to realize I didn't have the "stuff" needed to work in the ER but also it gave me a huge amount of respect for those that do. Thank you for the amazing job you do and also for the compassion for your patients.
Whenever I hear people suggesting that we already have a systems set up for the poor to get healthcare via hospital ERs I get really angry...they have obviously never spent time in an ER either waiting to be treated or working with the healthcare personnel there. Our ERs are awesome, do so much good but at the same time they are overworked and overlooked by the system. Most ERs are very, very busy, wait times for non-emergency treatment is sometimes very long, the triage system set-up for true emergencies work very well but can be frustrating for patients that are there because they simply lack medical coverage (insurance, Medicaid, Medicare). We all know there is a better way. I know a friend who had the exact same medical problem as your first example, he ended up in the hospital, had to have stents, dialysis for a few days, etc....now the hospital bill is huge....he missed the cut-off for Medicaid by $16 a YEAR!!  Thanks to ACA this year he will qualify for Medicaid so he can get the continued care he needs to heal.
Happy Thanksgiving to you ERDoc and everyone that works in a hospital today, you all are our true "Heroes"!!
