why the ACA (at the least) is necessary. They hold onto the canard that we have "the best healthcare in the world" and don't realize that the health of Americans has fallen behind all other industrialized democracies (GEE that would be a useful thing to report on the news along with the "failures of the ACA so far".)

As you pointed out, many of these people also think that ERs take care of things. If they thought about it they'd probably arrive at the conclusion that ER's would be inadequate. Anyone who's been to one would know that a major part of discharge instructions is almost always follow up with PCP or a specialist. To find the cause of the problem and treat it. Maybe they don't want to know that ER's don't keep people serves them not to know.

I'd love for you/other doctors to keep talking about these kinds of "case study" type examples of what ER" can't do and how the ACA helps. The public does not seem to understand...or not enough of the public. It would be so good if you/doctors could also speak/write loudly and persistently about the patients you know who've died because of lack of health insurance in other ways (though ER docs may not have that experience in your context). There was a great article I think in slate by a medical student in TX volunteering in a free clinic and watching her patients die from preventable diseases or treatable diseases that their basic-care free clinic could not treat.
