  •  And the bitter irony is that Rather's story about (45+ / 0-)

Bush's National Guard "service" was, in essence, accurate despite the fact that the document they got from whomever it was that palmed it off on them was forged.  The genius of the fraud is that it actually comported with many other sources in its depiction of Bush as a spoiled rich brat whose parent's connections gave him a free ride to not just avoid combat but also to party his ass off instead of performing his duty, even minimally.

Rather and Logan both broadcast pieces that used bogus sourcing that proved their own prejudices about their subjects; Logan's source, however, concocted a completely false narrative whereas Rather's was one that cleverly fabricated a document that was both pretty much accurate as to the historical facts but designed to be exposed (as it was, immediately after the broadcast, most likely through the urging of the forgers themselves) in order to discredit the overall accurate portrayal of Bush's military "career."

    •  Don't forget not flying because (6+ / 0-)

he didn't want to take the drug test.

      •  Is this clear? (0+ / 0-)

I've also read that he dropped his license recognizing he had panic attacks landing a plane, and that this was some kind of neurological tick that traced back to hearing stories of his dad's crash during WW2.

I'm not big on W, but I have to respect a guy who realizes he has no business flying an airplane. How many Navy planes did we lose in Vietnam because W's priary opponent in 2000 wasn't cable of such self-awareness?

orchestrated the whole forged document thing....  it got rid of Rather (remember the earlier George H.W. Bush-Rather dustup? They got Rather later on another pretense.... just like they got Saddam later for trying to get HW assassinated..) and immediately shutdown any accurate portrayals of W's military non-career..... It would be nice if they could have been as effective in running the government as they were in this kind of stuff....

This is what really got him his start in politics, and frankly when stuff like this 60 minutes story comes up, I always wonder if he had a hand in the deception.

    •  It's not certain that the documents were forged. (0+ / 0-)

All we can say for certain is that their true provenance is unknown. It turns out that a very few IBM Selectric typewriters with proportional spacing were available during the time period in question and even sub/superscript may have been possible.

Drudge/Free Republic/Breitbart or whomever it was, got way more credit than they deserved. Dig into for more.

      •  probably not Selectric (0+ / 0-)

The IBM Executive series had had proportional spacing since the 1940s. IBM did bring out a highly modified Selectric in the 1960s that had proportional spacing but it wasn't designed for ordinary typing. There were many IBM Executive typewriters in government offices and it would have been a very simple matter to compare the fonts as they limited in number.
