  •  Thanks, SN. I'm pretty upset and discouraged (7+ / 0-)

about the implications of the exchanges. For progressive social justice advocates, among the worst accusations that can be leveled is that of racism. When it's deserved, then so be it. And I also believe that many white folks are genuinely, unconsciously clueless, in varying degrees, about their own ethnic privilege (class privilege being just if not more important, however, in my mind) and lack of experience on the receiving end. And thus many need to be educated about legitimate slights, language, and portrayals that might be offensive, if unintended. And I feel bad that some people were offended by Rall's cartoon.

But for anyone on this progressive Democratic site to level the accusation of racism -- as distinguished from inadvertent insensitivity -- without substantial evidence sure seems mean-spirited and divisive. On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog. And on this or any other blog, to make such inflammatory assumptions about someone without pretty conclusive proof is wrong, and lazy. It ignores the varied, and in many cases passionate and years-long struggles many of us have taken part in to promote civil rights, civil liberties, and social justice. People should have a little more humility about their assumptions.
