Iowa is a pretty evenly balanced state, they have four House districts drawn by a nonpartisan commission, and as a result, they have one very conservative Republican in Steve King, one more moderate Republican in Tom Latham, a moderate-to-liberal Democrat in Bruce Braley, and a liberal Democrat in Dave Loebsack. So, basically, the system pretty much works. As Kos says, we want a little partisanship.

After all, the ONLY reason Republicans control the House is because of Republicans' project REDMAP which put Republicans in control of redistricting in 30 states in 2010 and gave us tea party House members who are beholden to their radical districts.

And the only reason this splinter group has control of the House is the Koch brothers' promise to primary any Republican House member who doesn't toe the tea party line.

Milbank can go pound sand for most of what he wrote.  Truly universal mandatory service would do two things:
      1. Produce a huge antiwar majority in the electorate composed of young adults and parents.
      2. Provide temporary jobs for young adults that give them training in responsibility -- training that many of us can use more of.

Even Democrats can be asses. Look at Rahm Emanuel.

The actual two things it would do is:

        1. Insure a supply of warm bodies such that, next time a Cheney acolyte gets into power, a vulture will be able to fly from Damascus to Islamabad subsisting on American dead.

        2. Provide a large pool of sullen resentful future voters receptive to right-wing arguments about the evils of government programs.

On the Internet, nobody knows if you're a dog... but everybody knows if you're a jackass.
