a combined-land-line-and-DSL deal with the local ISP that sounded sweet. I'd get unlimited local and long distance calling from my land line AND unlimited DSL, all for $40 a month. I wouldn't have to pay crummy AT&T $5 a month NOT to be listed in their stupid paper directory (us 40+ folks get the significance of that :), because I wouldn't even be one of their customers. Then I found out the $40 price from the local ISP was before taxes! Taxes were an additional $10 a month, at least.

Here is my hunch: AT&T lobbied the state FOR the taxes, because they can afford to absorb them, at least for their introductory period, and the little guy can't. Whereas AT&T can afford to have a "special $15 introductory offer" for voice-and-DSL service for new customers, the small-fry-DSL has to sock its customers with the taxes, in addition to its publicized rate.

I pay more for the service from the small ISP than I would pay for the same service from AT&T. It's worth it. When ever a promo comes from AT&T, I cut it up and feed it to my Red Wigglers.

It's here they got the range/ and the machinery for change/ and it's here they got the spiritual thirst. --Leonard Cohen
