  •  i think of my neighbor... (13+ / 0-)

not an elderly woman, but certainly in her 60s or early 70s...one blustery morning,  i noticed her walking down the sidewalk in her housecoat and pajamas...her uncertain step...the way she paused and looked around told me something was not right. i realized i had seen her before, picking up sticks in her yard, getting way too close to the road and again, in a housecoat and slippers. i went out and brought her into my house and asked her name and looked it up in the phone book -- she was so happy to have someone to talk to....chattering away. Then i walked her home. she started saying, no, no, this isn't my house; i don't know these people (her son, sleeping one off i another bedroom, and her husband, in poor health himself, on oxygen in another room)... it became clear she did this all the time if she wasn't watched.  it was fucking heartbreaking. that man, with his mail clutched to his chest, was probably exhibiting some of the same confusion -- and having seen it first hand, i can't believe there was anything that could have been perceived as threatening. yeah, the guy who shot him will have to "live with it." if he hadn't had a gun, so would that poor man.
