  •  The catholic church (11+ / 0-)

has already caused a horrid level of human destruction for decades; the ruined lives of numerous people who were sexually abused by predator priests, here in the United States and all over the world.

many of these abused people ended up to be drug addicts, alcoholics, some committed suicide, and some ended up being abusers themselves.

so the notion that up until now the church as been a great, laudable organization is a total JOKE; the worst kind of farce. I say the opposite: I say the church has always been a bigoted, violent patriarchal sort of organization that needs to be shut down. in fact, if not for new Hispanic/latino members, it's a safe bet this pathetic excuse for a church would be gone in fifty years (not soon enough).

The altarpiece of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the See (Seville, Spain) built by Ferdinand and Isabela (well, they had lots of help) after the Spanish ships came back from the new world laden with gold, mined and stolen from the indigenous people of south and central America. They murdered to get it, all for the greater glory of God and, I presume, the pope.

Nine tons of gold, slathered on this fantastic piece of wood sculpture (quite beautiful, probably 50' wide, 25' tall): paid in full by the blood of the Indians. Opened in 1520, it was the largest cathedral in the world at that time. This altarpiece was the lifetime work of a single craftsman, Pierre Dancart.

What stronger breast-plate than a heart untainted! Thrice is he arm'd, that hath his quarrel just; And he but naked, though lock'd up in steel, Whose conscience with injustice is corrupted. Henry VI Part II Act 3 Scene 2

      •  The Catholic King and Queen (5+ / 0-)

Isabella y Ferdinand united the Kingdoms of Iberia (whoops, Portugal!) by effectively suppressing, throwing out or murdering the brilliant diversity that had existed in Iberia. Lets not forget that Muslims and Jews lived in relative peace and that there incredible properity due to the lucrative olive oil trade and silk road trade. So when IyF financed Columbus, to was to recapture that wealth that they destroyed.

Good point! There is more than enough shame to go around.
