  •  An uneasy alliance in the best of times (11+ / 0-)

When I lived in North Carolina, Catholics were persona non grata there- they worshiped statues and saints, and a woman!! Fundies can't have that!
The religious right has always been run by the Fundies- Catholics only moved in there in the last decade or so as they joined together to ban abortion and gay marriage.
It will be interesting to see how the Catholic right wingers react- though people like Bill Donohue are practicing the "spin":

The pope made headlines in a new interview where he criticized the Catholic church for being "obsessed" with gays and abortion at the cost of making the church a "home for all." On Friday, Cuomo asked Donohue — a vocal opponent of LGBT rights — to respond to Francis' comments.

Donohue said he agreed that the church was not about social and political issues, but about "salvation." Cuomo suggested that Donohue was "one of the people [the pope's] sending this message to."

    •  I suspect Andrew Cuomo... (4+ / 0-)

...isn't too fond of Pope Francis' economic pronouncements, either.  He's a Republican in everything but the pelvic issues.

    •  Not all Catholics (6+ / 0-)

After nearly 20 years working in a Catholic school, most of the Catholics I know are liberal and beyond.  They love the spiritual and social justice aspects of their church and work against the Dolans and Donohues.  The ones who joined with the fundies are what I call 'Uber Catholics'; my devoutly Catholic mother had a simpler term for them:  'pillars of the Church' - it was not a compliment.

      •  That type of Catholic seems particularly dense in (6+ / 0-)

suburbia where the churches appear to exist for and follow the building of church schools. The "congregation" is more like a PTA in some respects. They also seem to be staffed by Irish priests. In my peripheral knowledge of churches of any kind that has been the case in my last two home places, spanned by thirty years.

In each case there were older, somewhat more traditional Catholic churches with no attached school. Catholic neighbors and co-workers "sorted" out by what kind they attended. Those involved with the "build a school and then a church to support it" type tended to be pretty right wing. Those choosing to travel sometimes to the other kind tended to fall on the other end of the Catholic spectrum. I am hearing second hand rumblings out of the first group about this new "radical" Pope.
