The idea that "no one knows for sure when Jesus is coming"
originates in two places in the new Testament.  The first is I Thessalonians, believed by many scholars to be the first letter written by the apostle Paul.

There is a problem here, because Paul taught elsewhere that the second coming was imminent, even suggesting that it would be better not to marry and have children, due to the tribulation that would accompany the apocalypse.

Therefore, many scholars think that the idea that "no one knows when Jesus is coming" was inserted into I Thessalonians later, after it became quite clear that Jesus would NOT return, as he said he would, during the lifetimes of some of his apostles.

The uncertainty of apocalyptic timing also appears in II Peter, which while purportedly written by the Apostle Peter, is believed by most scholars today to be pseudoepigraphic, i.e., written by an unknown person using Peter's name to convey (ironically) authenticity.

Regardless of what you think about the authenticity of these two letters, there is a clear contradiction in the New Testament , with both Jesus and Paul saying the kingdom would come during their generation, inexplicably alongside the suspect suggestion that it could be anytime in history, no one knows for sure.

Personally, I think Jesus meant what he said when he said the kingdom would come during the lives of his apostles, and the "revision" was similar to the long string of revised dates the world will end as predicted by various "authorities" throughout history.

I read a lot and I must be honest, I just happened to have recently finished a book by James D. Tabor, "Paul and Jesus: How The Apostle Transformed Christianity" that dwelt quite a bit on this issue.

I had earlier read another book by Tabor, "The Jesus Dynasty," but it was only in reading the introduction to "Paul and Jesus" that I realized that Tabor and I were at the same undergraduate college (Abilene Christian) at the same time.

I wish I had known him then, and perhaps I would have gone in the direction he did, i.e., a doctorate in theology and author, rather than taking the bare minimum number of bible courses required to graduate and majoring in marketing lol.

Having spent 2 years in Vietnam,I think your Vietnamese is great. I agree. If Ted becomes President,I am moving.
where? I have no idea. I am going to read the books you mention. My ignorance of the Bible needs fixing.
Thanks for giving me some books to start with!
          Have a great week,
          Mike
