    If a business is not viable enough to pay a living wage to its workers then it needs to go and the capital that is re-invested in it should be invested in something productive enough to do so.  

    This is a democracy and the economy belongs to the people.  The people have the right to decide what the rules they want the economy to operate under.  The notion that the "market" is something unto itself is just propaganda from those who control the capital.  A decent minimum wage is just part of making sure the machine that is the free-market works to the benefit of all.

    What we have seen over the last 30 years is the systematic dismantling of the protections in labor law, unions, trade laws, etc. that created the middle class.  The result has been the concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people and the decline in wages and the middle class.
