Rush is just an entertainer. He's not political, he's just entertaining the masses...

“Do you know what bought me all this?” he asked, waving his hand in the general direction of his prosperity. “Not my political ideas. Conservatism didn’t buy this house. First and foremost I’m a businessman. My first goal is to attract the largest possible audience so I can charge confiscatory ad rates. I happen to have great entertainment skills, but that enables me to sell airtime.”
Let's just for a moment take rush at his word. He's just an entertainer and businessman. Selling a product. This makes his vileness even worse. He's creating hate and despair, not because he actually believes what he's saying, he's just entertaining......

lation, tax breaks for billionaires, global warming denial, teabag candidates, corporate supremes, racism, sexism, and last but not least, penile enhancement formula.

This is a list of 76 universities for Rush Limbaugh that endorse global warming denial, racism, sexism, and GOP lies by broadcasting sports on over 170 Limbaugh radio stations.

      •  One thing I have noticed... (5+ / 0-)

is that the people who listen to him are very, very angry white guys.  I think he gives voice to an angry, inarticulate bunch of "morans."

I just never knew there were so many of them...

Limbaugh contributes to their anger, vs. how much anger is innate.  My mom claims that some of her longtime friends changed dramatically when they started watching Fox news.  Their viewing quickly manifested in constant agitation, anger, scapegoating, and fear.  Now there is always something stuck in their craw while before they were far better adjusted.

It's just an anecdote and I suspect Limbaugh/Fox News draws a certain sort of personality in as listeners/viewers.  But just as depression and anxiety can be mitigated with treatment, anger and fear can be exacerbated by the right wing propaganda machine.  What's striking to me is how similarly the anger and fear are manifested in Rush listeners.  They not only fixate on the same topics and events, they fixate in the same way mentally.  Rush is affecting their brains at a very primitive level.

seriously, the tone! He could be saying anything and it would raise my blood pressure.

            •  For me, it's his authoritarian speech pattern (0+ / 0-)

In the pauses where one would be thinking about what Rush said, he shoves in a nutshell repitition of his message, like he's trying to shout down your inner thoughts.  The tone also has a sort of lecturing vibe, maybe I'm not describing it well but I suspect Beck's chalkboard schoolin' schtick was inspired by Rush's talking style.

I've noticed that many Rush listeners will relate some inanity bellowed by Rush, and then follow with "and you know, if you think about it...he makes a lot of sense!"  They really do view Rush as some kind of teacher.  It's fucked up.
