  •  Ah, but they do in a sense... (0+ / 0-)

...demonstrated by the the demonstrations in Bogota and elsewhere in the country.

There is no difficulty getting people to unite. There are ad-hoc "strikes" all the time; closing roads in protest, boycotts, demonstrations. Colombians are a very proud people and VERY patriotic. But they are realists. They know there is only so much they can accomplish this way. This is why FARC and ELN arose in the first place.

They see El Norte as meddling and manipulating with a lot of justification. We have, in our relations with Colombia, ALWAYS taken the side of the established upper classes at the expense of the middle class and poor.

    •  I can't remember which sociologist it was.... (0+ / 0-)

...out of the two great Colombian sociologists of the 20th century, Orlando Fals Borda or Eduardo Santa, but one of them said that in Colombia everyone kicks the class below them.  When you get down to the campesino, who's at the bottom, well, he kicks the dog.  Long story short, there hasn't been much of a united front between the middle class and the poor!

My comments are coming from a place of love.
