Carolinas. I never owned slaves. But I benefit from inherited status and money from my ancestors.

But there is more. There is not one person in the US, North or South, East or West, who does not benefit from the theft of slave labor in building the economy and infrastructure of the US, except those descendants of those who performed the labor who continue to be oppressed. There is not one White person who does not have legal, social, and economic privileges denied to almost all Black and Brown folk, even many of the richest and most powerful.

I could start in on the empires of the past, from Egypt and Babylon through Europe since the Renaissance, and the various native empires of Asia and Africa, almost all of them taking racism as a foundational principle. It is not only Whites who are racist. It is everybody with excessive wealth and power over others, and everybody ginning up fear of identifiable population groups in order to promote war, oppression, or genocide. It is not, in general, the poor and oppressed who are racist. They are far more open to tolerance, non-violence, and seeking common ground than the privileged.

If you do not know that you are racist, if you do not believe that you could be racist, you are racist. If you do know that you have a tendency to racism by virtue of being human, you have a chance to counter that racism.

    •  It's a bit ironic for me in regards to slaves (0+ / 0-)

because the wing of my family that most recently owned slaves, on my paternal grandmothers side, is the side of my family that has received the least status, money, etc. from owning slaves. It the folks who willing gave them up and who profited from them indirectly were the ones who most status and money came from.

If knowledge is power and power corrupts, does that mean that knowledge corrupts?
