been pushing this for a while.  I'll be honest, I hadn't know that a bill had passed in Indiana.  Not particularly surprised, but the bill text should give pause to those who would dismiss the threat. Delegate would be appointed, and each state would be equally represented.

Looking at the situation in the states right now, that doesn't inspire confidence.

When you start to realize that "Democrats" from states like Rhode Island and west Virginia and others are equally as likely to embrace the ALEC agenda as Republicans in other states, it should give us all pause.

      Things like

      1) No State may maintain it's statehood if after 10 years it is a net benificiary of Federal benefits.

      2) One man One Vote: Districts must be compact, and that the most compact district is most likely correct.

      3) No Immortals: Only Natural persons may participate in
the political process. No Corporation may possess rights of personhood beyond those de-minimis characteristics
needed to administer a corporation as property.

      4) No Immortal wealth: The rule of Perpetuities apply not just to property but wealth, and that no property may be deeded inter generationally beyond 21 years of the known lives of survivors. (Estate tax as part of a Rule of Perpetuity).

      5) No interstate Banking.: Banks while federally chartered may not operate across state borders.

The sexual freedom of individuals is to be considered a fundamental right and regulated only within Strict Scrutiny.

      •  I like #2-4 and maybe #5 (0+ / 0-)

#1 is a bad idea (no reason we should deny the public welfare across state lines any more than we should reduce it otherwise).

I'd really like to see a constitutional convention to increase the amount of democracy, though. Aside from #2, #3 in your proposals, and a clause specifically allowing and perhaps requiring tough regulations on campaign finance, the most critical thing would be to fix our voting systems. A proportional representation system (say MMP or PAL) in the House of Representatives (even if on a state-by-state basis) would permanently eliminate the effectiveness of gerrymandering.

It would also allow a fairer vote in terms of third parties, and I don't mean the ones we have today. If rural voters could vote for an actual populist agrarian party, for instance, the appeal of the Republicans might decline swiftly. Meanwhile real progressives would almost always have a better choice than we do today. End the lesser of two evils, and make everyone's vote count equally. (We'd need runoff voting of some kind for the Senate and Presidency, of course, though if we're going to amend the constitution we might as well reduce the Senate's power considerably.)

We make fun of the idea of an Article V today, but when this tea party talk-radio bullshit peters out, we're going to need it on our side. Lawrence Lessig has been saying this for years.

    •  ALEC's best tool is RW radio and it's a shame so (8+ / 0-)

many of our colleges put their sports logos on those megaphones.

This is a list of 76 universities for Rush Limbaugh that endorse global warming denial, racism, sexism, and GOP lies by broadcasting sports on over 170 Limbaugh radio stations.

in most areas of the US there are no free alts for political talk while driving or working.

they know that is their big advantage and they're trying to take it one step further.
