    a vibrant middle class, with its yearning for more education, its growing understanding of the dynamics at play in the economy, and its collective desire to build a better world for everyone.
    It can't afford a greased path from poverty to economic freedom, because that drains the low wage labor pool of people willing to work themselves to death for a pittance.
    It can't afford a political reawakening of the masses which inevitably comes from increased awareness of economic injustice, because that could mean curbs on everything from labor abuses to finacial swindles to environmental destruction.

    Put all these bogeymen together and you actually have something the 1% can't afford; a world where their hegemony is eroded to a point where control of the social order is very difficult, if not impossible.
